Tympanic ear thermometers are a very quick method of reading the temperature especially in children and will give a read-out in seconds. Ear thermometers rely on measuring infrared (heat) radiation from the eardrum.
To ensure reliable readings it is important to ensure that the thermometer points correctly towards the tympanic membrane in the ear. Pull the ear lobe up and backwards to straighten the ear canal. This allows the
thermometer to obtain a better “view” of the tympanic membrane and therefore operate more efficiently.
Between patients, a clean tympanic thermometer ear probe cover is attached to the probe to prevent any cross contamination.
